The next best thing

90 minutes.

Last May, my friend and fellow adventurer Micah and I did our first ever day of climbing at Pinnacles National Monument (see photo above). Today after work, we went to Ironworks climbing gym and climbed indoors – the next best thing.

We started out easy and worked our way to harder routes, each taking a break while the other climbed. It’s good to have a friend to figure out rock problems with – you can support each other from the ground.

If you can’t get out to your favorite wall, favorite bike route or trail – do the next best thing and try the indoor version of your favorite sport. You’ll keep that momentum going and be in better shape the next time you go out.

Catch a glimpse

2.8 miles. 30 minutes.

This morning I took a run up into the hills – to catch a glimpse of a fabled rock climbing destination in Berkeley. 20121203-091123.jpg
The first I came upon was Indian Rock, a small park with a large crag overlooking the bay. I sat for awhile, soaking in the morning sun.

As I sat there, I silently thanked the people that had the foresight to plan this micro park – allowing me and many others a piece of nature to enjoy in our neighborhood. A few more minutes and I ran on. 20121203-091756.jpg
The next park I came across is a storied climbing spot. Chalk marks mark every climbable face, and the entrance sign says as much. When my climbing gets better, this’ll be the place!

As I jogged down the hill towards home, I stumbled upon yet another beautiful micro park – the morning light shining through the trees past the moss covered rocks, a park bench waiting for someone to reflect upon the world in it.

Take a run through your neighborhood, and walk through every little park and green space you stumble upon. You’re guaranteed discovery – and you might even find a few new favorite spots. Catch a glimpse of the bits of nature around you – and adventure everyday.

Climbing the wall

90 Minutes on the wall.

Today I took a long awaited trip to Berkeley Ironworks, a climbing gym in West Berkeley owned by Touchstones.

It’s a veritable playground for adults and kids alike. Hardcore climber junkies, newbies, moms with babies (one was nursing between goes at bouldering!), hipsters and jocks under one roof.

I wailed on my flimsy arms over and over, starting with the easy routes until I couldn’t close my hands. I’ll be back!
