Play.

2.5 miles. 1 hour.

I spent the holidays in Massachusetts, just south of Boston. The day after Christmas, Lillie and I took a walk around a set of old cranberry bogs called the Burrage.

The irrigation ditches were frozen over, and my inner 8 year-old came to life. First I tested the ice, but it was too thin to walk/slide on. A good alternative? Throwing rocks!

The sound of the rocks skittering on the ice echoed through the air. The smile on my face grew larger. It’s good to play – and great to get in touch with your inner 8-year old. Try it!

Tilden Park hiking

5 miles. 2 hours.

After a big breakfast at Saul’s Deli in Berkeley, my brother and stepdad ventured out into the drizzle for a 2 hour Tilden Park adventure. Slipping and sliding through the mud and shrugging off the cold, we hiked around Anza Lake from the Botanical Gardens and through the hills for a wet, rewarding walk.

Take a Sunday Hike

6.6 mile hike.

Today, Lillie and I decided to do a Sunday hike. After lunch, we headed to Mill Valley to hike around the base of Mt Tamalpais and up Blithedale ridge for views of Marin, the Bay and San Francisco.

It felt amazing to be out on the trail – the fall leaves are changing color and falling, but the air was warm and still smelled of summer today.

We plodded along up and down rocky fire roads, steep trails, across creeks and through new redwood growth. Trail runners, mountain bikers, hikers and folks out for a leisurely stroll shared the trails and beamed at one another as they passed.

Today I felt lucky to be outside on such a beautiful day, thankful that I had made the time to do so, and grateful to be able to share another adventure with my partner in life.

We all lead busy lives that are full of commitments – and we often forget to to take time for ourselves and to appreciate the natural world. Step outside and drink it in – you won’t regret it for a minute, and when you get back, you’ll be a whole person again.
