Play.

2.5 miles. 1 hour.

I spent the holidays in Massachusetts, just south of Boston. The day after Christmas, Lillie and I took a walk around a set of old cranberry bogs called the Burrage.

The irrigation ditches were frozen over, and my inner 8 year-old came to life. First I tested the ice, but it was too thin to walk/slide on. A good alternative? Throwing rocks!

The sound of the rocks skittering on the ice echoed through the air. The smile on my face grew larger. It’s good to play – and great to get in touch with your inner 8-year old. Try it!

Tilden Park hiking

5 miles. 2 hours.

After a big breakfast at Saul’s Deli in Berkeley, my brother and stepdad ventured out into the drizzle for a 2 hour Tilden Park adventure. Slipping and sliding through the mud and shrugging off the cold, we hiked around Anza Lake from the Botanical Gardens and through the hills for a wet, rewarding walk.

The next best thing

90 minutes.

Last May, my friend and fellow adventurer Micah and I did our first ever day of climbing at Pinnacles National Monument (see photo above). Today after work, we went to Ironworks climbing gym and climbed indoors – the next best thing.

We started out easy and worked our way to harder routes, each taking a break while the other climbed. It’s good to have a friend to figure out rock problems with – you can support each other from the ground.

If you can’t get out to your favorite wall, favorite bike route or trail – do the next best thing and try the indoor version of your favorite sport. You’ll keep that momentum going and be in better shape the next time you go out.
